Kornacki: John Kerry, the eternal underdog
John Kerry will leave the Senate—his home for 28 years—if he is officially confirmed as the new Secretary of State. Kerry ran for president in 2004 and came close to winning. Al Gore almost chose him for the VP slot in 2000. And he’s become one of the Democratic Party’s leading voices on foreign affairs. He’s earned a place in history—which makes it so easy to forget how close he came to being nothing more than a has-been.
