Romney/Ryan lose home states

The MSNBC political panel talks about the Democrats’ win in the Rust Belt and the Romney-Ryan ticket’s big losses Tuesday night. The Nation’s John Nichols joins the discussion to talk about how the recall election of Gov. Scott Walker impacted voters there, and Sen. Sherrod Brown retaining his seat in Ohio, which also saw an off-year fight for union rights.

>> have a call to make in an important senate race. in the state of ohio , nbc predicts that sherrod brown has won reelection. he's the incumbent democratic senator in ohio . obviously, the ohio presidential race is too close to call. but the senate race, more outside spending than anybody else in the country. he has held on to his seat.

>> not surprising in that case since he knows the electorate. a small point. republicans have lost both of the home states of their candidates on the presidential ticket.

>> massachusetts and wisconsin .

>> new hampshire, romney has a home there. he may lose that. he's lost michigan. his own home state. it's something you don't see very often.

>> he will probably lose california too.

>> he has a home there too.

>> outside of ohio right now the democrats own the russ belt. all the talk about jobs, all the talk about the bad economy.

>> michigan and pennsylvania and wisconsin has been cut off. there's a big detour sign there. go back to the original plan.

>> this terms of wisconsin , some of the best reporting on wisconsin through the whole uprising around the union stripping and recall effort against scott walker was done by john nick else. familiar with the politics in wisconsin , which has been called for president obama . and also with the politics in ohio where he is tonight. john, you're in toledo. tell us about the view of that wisconsin win from ohio as we still await the projection of the race there.

>> reporter: well, a cheer went up when they heard that obama lo looked to be winning wisconsin . because wisconsin and ohio have a real connection. these were the two states where republican governors moved to try to take away collective bargaining rights in an aggressive way. something amazing happened in 2011 . labor organized. it came back and fought hard to be ready for the big fights. and they didn't win every place. labor won the senate. they won the ohio veto override bill. but what they did was they put people into position all over these states. those people never went home. they never stopped campaigning. and so it's very interesting that tonight we see sherrod brown winning in ohio . we see tammy baldwin doing very well in the wisconsin senate race. these are two people who went to the map back in 2011 to stand with labor and labor has stuck with them. i think something real happened, and it is affecting what's going on now in 2012 .

>> john nickels, thank you for
