>> you can also make a call in an important and hotly-contested senate race. in the state of connecticut , nbc news projects that the winner is chris murphy . beating linda mcmahon in the the senate race. that's a surprise. david plouffe , i'd love to hear your reaction to that. we have had a win for bill nelson in that state, even as the presidential race is too close to call. and in connecticut, where president obama won, we have in that senate race there had a call for chris murphy . what's your reaction for that?
>> chris murphy ran a great race. our senate candidates across the country faced an unprecedented amount of super pac money . they have run great races. i think it wasn't too long ago where the republican party thought they had a good chance to win back the senate. i think the only question tonight is are we going to add to our majority. we have a good chance to do that.
>> in terms of the closeness of the race, there are some automatic recount thresholds that are still too close to call. we e may be in automatic recount territory. how confident are you in the process of counting votes and in the process we saw long lines in florida. we heard angry characterizations of the politics behind those lines in florida from charlie crist . we also saw long lines in specific neighborhoods, democrat-leaning neighborhoods in ohio. how confident are you in the process of this election?
>> well, first of all, what's remarkable is people stood in the long lines. first during early voting all throughout the country. and it was a powerful image. obviously, after this election, we can reflect on what we need to change. it ought to not take people five or six hours to cast their vote. so that's something for tomorrow. but i think what you're seeing is the determination of people to see this president carry forward. we saw that through early vote . our remarkable volunteers out there are the reason that we feel we're going to win the presidency again tonight because they are turning out people in unprecedented grass roots movement. on the battleground states , they are going to be close. but in the raw vote coming in, we feel confident.
>> david plouffe , you're one of the most serious and on message people i ever interview on any subject. can i ask you a personal question? don't be scared. what are you going to do tomorrow? win or lose, do you have plans to do something personal and go on vacation? what does david plouffe do after the election?
>> well, it's my daughter's fourth birthday tomorrow. so we will have a birthday party tomorrow night and i can't wait to get back home and see her.
>> happy birthday to her. thank you, sir. enjoy your evening.
>> thank you.
>>> more exit polls ahead. we'll be looking at the effect of hurricane sandy on this
