Student gives eyewitness account in Ohio shooting

>> joining us now, jonathan who is a senior at chardon high school and was inside the school. jonathan , tell us what happened.

>> well, i was i started my first period in the library with a guided study hall and to get my energy out, i took a waaround the halls it sounded like someone was splashing plywood against the tables and then identified it as gun shots. everyone was running and screaming. one kid ran past me just out the door. i thought of doing that but i decided to go to the library because the people were in there. the gun shots were not very loud. soy got in there and -- so i got in there and we barricaded ourselves in the room. a teacher put a chair to the door to block it.

>> you must have been all terrified. were you using you're cell phones or texting to get a message out? what were you doing?

>> i was sitting there feeling nervous, mostly. i had left all my things in the guided study hall . i had just essentially ran. everyone was texting and a lot of people could not get texts because a lot of people had verizon and everyone was texts at the same time. there was a computer in the room, so we were getting updates from members of the school. that is how we knew when to get out.

>> did you have the sense that students were being targeted that the shooter actually knew and went after particular students and there could have been an incident that caused this?

>> i do not know the shooter personally. but the people that were targeted seemed specific. i do not want to talk more about it.

>> had there been anything on social media ? any indication that something was arye and there could have been an incidents?

>> i do not use twitter but i heard from a news report, i think that the shooter had texted somebody about this. some sort of warning was sent out. but other than that, i'm not sure.

>> had you had drills in the school?

>> absolutely. we had quite a few drills and we -- a lot of people knew this was not a drill because the principal said immediately lock down. usually they warn us and we lock all the doors.

>> there's a pa system , you got an alert, an announcement from the principal's office?

>> yes.

>> when did you tell them it was all clear? did the police come in and check room by room?

>> we got an e-mail that said that the police will escort you to, it said the middle of the school but they were taken to the elementary.

>> since we see so many parents and children being reunited, have you seen your folks?

>> yeah. i'm here with them right now. big relief when i saw them. a big relief when i saw all my friends at maple, i gave them all a big hug. i'm glads to be alive right now.

>> we are of course relieved for you, and this will be taking a lot of time to absorb, our hearts are with you and your family and your fellow students and thanks for sharing your eyewitness account. thank you jonathan .
