>> the other side, now tied, mitt romney is unveiling his tax plan hoping to improve his standing with conservatives. former missouri senator is a pr romney supporter. let's talk about what is going on in michigan. they are in a tie and all the polling shows that mitt romney still has a real problem with conservatives. that is where he is really lagging. how do you suggest to try to shore up conservative base?
>> yeah, he was behind by, what 15 points?
>> right.
>> a week or ten days ago and now it's a tie. you can describe it as a surge for us, he will keep talking about what he has always talk besides, -- he has always talk besides. the problem is the congress did give him what he wanted. he got obama care and he got dodd-frank and got the tax increases in his health care plan and that is why unemployment has been above 8% for longer than any time since the depression. that is what we are running against and we are running for the things like that tax plan if governor will announce today. it will create jobs and opportunity for people. that is what the campaign is about.
>> do you believe that it can be deficit neutral? a lot of people will question that.
>> sure, it can be.
>> that is the old supply side deal though, isn't it?
>> people used to say to me, well can you balance the budget while cutting taxes and i always said, you know, you cannot balance the budget without cutting taxes because the first thing you have to have for anything else we have to have is economic growth and prosperity. every time we do a marginal tax cut we have had an economic boom . you have to cut spending. we have made nmore detailed proposals on cutting spending than anybody else and you broaden the tax base and governor romney has been open to that. you can have economic growth , you need smaller government.
>> senator, what about the essential issues and some of the more controversial statements that santorum has made. let's play you a speech that is getting attention.
>> a father of lies has his sights on what you would think the father of lies, satan, would have his sights on. a good, powerful country. the united states of america . he attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions. we look at the shape of main line proestantism in this country and it's gone from the world of christianity.
>> do you think we should be having a debate over religion right now?
>> well, look, senator santorum is entitled to his views, we are not, you know, getting into that, we are talking about the economy. we are certainly going to contrast our tax plan with his, it's neutral as regards to where people ought to invest their money and his has a bigger tax break for one sector of the economy than it does for the other and that is picking and winners and that is what barack has done and we are not going to do that. we will cut taxes across the board and that will grow the economy.
>> does romney believe that some of the other people that have been questioning the president's religion and bringing up the whole question of jeremiah wright s that an appropriate challenge to the president? are knothose issues we should be addre addressing?
>> every campaign has to talk about the issues they feel are at the forefront, romney gave a good speech at cpac and talked about social issues and what he did in massachusetts, it's a strong record. the issue that is more in the minds of the voters is the economy. we have been languishing with unemployment above 8% for the longest time since the depression. you have to decrease the size of government and put
